Easy Steps for Closing Your Pool

Stains, corrosion and scale are not just problems during the swimming season; they're problems during every season. By getting the right products and following the simple procedures below, you'll be able to protect your pool during the cold winter weather. Climates vary by region, so ask your local authorized dealer for your area's specific winterizing instructions.

  • Bring a sample of your pool's water to your authorized dealer so you can get a complete water analysis. Follow your dealer's instructions to balance the water as needed.
  • Clean your pool by brushing the walls, skimming the water surface, and vacuuming the pool bottom. Scrub pool wall tile and vinyl with cleaner.  Empty pump and skimmer baskets.
  • Clean or backwash your filter with a filter cleaner and degreaser. Follow the label's instructions.
  • Protect your pool water with a shock treatment, and follow the label's instructions. Run the pump for several hours to disperse the product thoroughly.
  • Protect your pool against algae by adding an algaecide, and follow the label's instructions. Then add a product to remove metal contaminants from the water. Run your pump for several hours to disperse the product.
  • Lower the water in the pool down to the level that is recommended for winterizing.
  • Drain water from all of your equipment.  Some of the items you might want to consider are pumps, filters, heaters, chlorinators, hoses and pipes. Ask your dealer if you should protect your pipes and equipment with a non-toxic, swimming pool antifreeze. Ladders, chlorinators (if offline model), pump and skimmer baskets should be stored in a dry, safe place when not in use.
  • Cover your pool with a quality cover.  It will prevent leaves, dirt, and debris from getting into your pool.

After consulting your dealer, you may decide to leave your pool open during the winter months. If this is the case, the following are recommended at a minimum:

  • Run your pump at least several hours a day, or continously if the temperature gets down to freezing.
  • Keep normal pH and minimize free chlorine levels.
  • Keep leaves, dirt and debris out of your pool.
